the pressure of being a 3-year-old

I just watched this documentary called, Nursery University, and it was so messed up!

Dont get me wrong, the movie itself was very well-done, but the fact that preschools in New York City are as prestigious and hard to get into as the city's universities is preposterous!

The film chronicled several families from various backgrounds and income-levels as they searched, and fought, for the 'perfect' nursery school for their children.

No one would argue that parents will do anything in their power to do what's best for their children but, really! Is it necessary to pay $15,000 (as one family stated) for a 3-year-old?!

One family was from a lower income bracket and as they searched and applied and prayed to get into these schools, wondered how they would pay for it, deciding to just "figure it out" when the time came later, if they got in.

But this time when your children are young is the time to be saving for college and retirement. What will you do when high-school tuition is even higher? and then what happens when it comes time, then, for them to go to these universities you've been preparing them for?? You're already in $100,000's worth of debt already...

Sheesh. It stresses me out and Im not even in that situation!

One family, the sort of quintessential Manhattan-ites, that have excess money coming out their ears stress about not getting into even one of the 7 schools they applied to and ended up being accepted to all of them, while other families that put all their resources into one or two schools they were really hoping for and were going to hardly afford didnt get in at all and ended up either settling for a more public, less expensive school, or left the city for another where the school system were "far more civilized."

On top of all of that, the most frustrating part about it all is the fact that these parents that surely do, truly want the best for their child end up putting immense amounts of pressure to succeed and be the absolute best starting AT THREE YEARS OLD!

It's absolutely maddening, but also a very eye-opening documentary and well worth watching.
